The first business forum ‘EAEU–Greece: A New Bridge for Cooperation and Development’, has taken place as part of the TIF-Helexpo 2017 exhibition. It was held in September, Thessaloniki, Greece.
In opening the plenary sesssion the Greek Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Georgios Katrougalos expressed an opinion that trade was not reflecting the economic situation between the countries:
''The current mutual trade volume of USD 4.6 billion between EAEU countries and Greece is clearly not consistent with the scale of our close economic ties over many years. It can and should be more” he said.
Over 200 people participated, according to forum organisers, and included delegations from govenments of Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, in addition to a number of companies and representatives of business associations from EAEU countries.
A Joint Declaration on Cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the Government of the Hellenic Republic was made on 24 June 2017 with the purpose of developing dialogue between EAEU countries and Greece.
The EAEU or Eurasian Economic Union, is an international organisation concerned with regional economic integration and includes the Republics of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz, and the Russian Federation. The EAEU agreement was introduced January 1, 2015. It allows the free movement of goods and services, capital and labour, and a common economic policy in the bloc.
